"Turning over a new leaf" An interpretation of the Gun Violence Archive 2019 by Adelaide Willert

Gun Violence Archive 2019 (Mass Shootings in 2019)

All evidence taken into account as of January 7th, 2019. Further updates and alterations to the Gun Violence Archive were added after this date of access.

There's violence everywhere. It seems to be unavoidable and inevitable. It can happen on a small scale or a large scale, on a local scale or a global scale, and it affects more than two people every time there is an act of violence. Violence is a fault of humanity.

Everyone on Tumblr, Instagram. in the newspapers - both online and in paper form - has appraised the New Year, and the most popular phrase to describe how we as a world are entering 2019 is that we are "turning over a new leaf." We're supposedly starting to "act or behave in a better or more responsible way" (Google). But turning over a new leaf also implies that we are initiating change.

Since January 1, 2019, there have been five mass shootings in the United States of America. Last year, from January 1 through January 7, there were also five mass shootings in the United States (Gun Violence Archive). That doesn't sound like turning over a new leaf, because it isn't an alteration in behaviour for the better. It isn't any change at all. I understand that this judgement is being made off of a single week, but the unfortunate truth is that gun control needs to change. It hasn't changed since 1776, it hasn't changed over the decades of deaths.

Until we find another answer, a happy medium to solve the gun control issue, we need to take care of each other and try to find a way instead of saying that gun control isn't an issue.
