In an article published by the New York Times on January 11 2019, Liam Stack writes about the damage done at Joshua Tree National Park during the ongoing government shutdown. The partial shutdown began on December 22, and many federal employees missed their first paycheck this week. Some employees have been working without pay at the national park, but complete upkeep is very difficult with limited staff. The signature trees of the park have been victims to people wanting to camp and drive through restricted areas. The national park system is only one example of how the whole country is affected by the government shutdown. This destruction of the ecosystem due to lack of regulation and human interference is similar to the near wipeout of buffalo in the great plains. The species was hunted almost to the point of extinction, and the animal was not even fully used. If this government shut down continues for much longer, permanent effects could become evident in the national parks.
this was very well written and i think it is so sad that they are destroying the national parks. i also feel bad for all the species who were hunted and affected from this.
