As Government Pulls Back, Charities Step In to Help Released Migrants - Emma Hancock

As Government Pulls Back, Charities Step In to Help Released Migrants

Lately in the United States, immigration from the southern border to Mexico has rapidly increased that has caused lots of tension and chaos within the government. This has made Trump show a decrease in efforts to ensure the migrants' safety when they have been granted routine entry to the United States. These immigrants that enter the United States are given an option to stay in a shelter or be released and take care of themselves. Both options are increasingly becoming unsafe for the people being affected. The federal government states that there is not much that they can do to solve this issue, and local governments are reluctant to get involved due to liability and cost matters. The government used to have a system called "safe release" that overlooked the migrants and made sure they would not be left unsafe when allowed in the United States, but the government has abandoned this practice. Although the government has yet to make an attempt to ensure protection over these individuals and families, charities along the border of California to Texas have stepped in to provide needs such as food, hygiene, and comfort for these migrants. Since these shelters rely on donations to keep standing, it has been a struggle for them to continue to provide their migrant relief services. Many have had problems of going over the capacity of people in these shelters and mindlessly released immigrants to the streets.

I think this issue of unsafe immigrants is a huge problem that is being overlooked. Although I'm glad it is now being brought to light, this problem has been going on for years now. It amazes me how people can ignore the health and safety of other people just because they did not enter a country legally. In the end they are still humans, and cannot be left to die if the government has the power to take care of them. If the United States once had a system to ensure the protection over these people, what changed in the government to that made safety of others not a priority? This reminds me of the time of the Gilded Age and right after the 13th amendment when slaves were freed in the United States. Many african-americans could not fend for themselves when released and were lost without the government's help, but organizations such as the Freedman's Bureau took them in and gave them what they needed to survive.

  1. That is such a tragic development, it is sad to see that our government has forsaken a policy meant to insure the human rights of migrants. Instead we have to have charity organizations step in to pick up the slack that the government has dropped. I find your comparison to the freedman's bureau interesting, as it is a connection I would not have made.

  3. It is so sad that these people are being ignored by the government, but I'm glad charities are helping out those people. It makes you realize that there is some good still in the world.
