Current Events: Madagascar Plague
In August if this year, a plague broke out in Madagascar, which is an island off of the southern east coast of Africa. This epidemic has killed 133 people so far and there are almost 2,000 confirmed cases found throughout the island. Although, recently the number of new cases has been declining. According the the World Health association, the number of hospitalizations due to the plague has also declined. The plague is still active in 12 districts of Madagascar, and around 61% of the cases are the pneumonic plague, which is easier transmitted and spread than the bubonic plague. Luckily the number of cases is decreasing so there should be no new cases within a few months.
Plagues and epidemics are terrible but at least it happened in an isolated place with a lower population, where risk of it spreading internationally is very low. The ebola epidemic was on continental Africa so it could spread to a much larger population, killing over 11,000 people. It is also good that this disease is very easily cured, because the people who died from the disease probably did not seek out medical attention in time, because so many more people have lived than died. Hopefully medical technology today can help completely cure the disease so the people of Madagascar can feel safe again.
