A question of the freedom of speech- Noah Huerta

http://www.bbc.com/news/world-us-canada-41892544

From what this article reads,
it seems a person, Juli Briskman, has just been fired from their job for showing the president a middle finger and posting a picture online.

The context:
-The president was just escorted on a motorcade on October 28th, and Juli wanted to use an opportunity to silently, yet openly gesture the president.
-Juli posted pictures of what she was doing on her own social media accounts, unconnected to her work.
-The company of her work stated social media policies, which evidently prohibit "lewd or obscene" pictures surprisingly.
-Juli was never on work hours during any of this.

This really raises questions about our freedom of the first amendment. Should it be considered over controlling if a company fires you for pictures based on your personal social media account?
Is it really important for anybody to be fired based off obscene pictures in off-work, personal accounts of minor publicity? Can you flip off the president of the united states? Should you be fired if you just post a picture of a middle finger with no context? Can you be protected by the 1st amendment if the case is a private company, with no baring to the law? IS THERE ANY BARING TO THE LAW?

None of these are rhetorical. I really don't know.
