The case against George Papadopoulos revealed contact between Trump's campaign and Russian agents during the 2016 election to benefit Trump. The campaign also received information that the Russians had thousands of emails containing dirt on Hillary Clinton months before the hacked emails were made public. The White House press secretary, Sarah Huckabee Sanders, played down Papadopoulos's role in the campaign. "This individual was a member of a volunteer advisory council that met one time over the course of a year," she said, "I'd hardly call that some sort of regular adviser or a senior member of the staff." Papadopoulos repeatedly interacted with an international professor who promised compromising information about Clinton from Russia. Papadopoulos then lied about the timing and meaning of these interactions to the F.B.I. He secretly pleaded guilty on Oct. 5 in a document that was made public today. This was written by Tom Schoenberg.
