So in summary the article is talking about how in the past the NRA advertized for gun ownership and how it created the culture surrounding guns. Personally I am an active 2nd amendment supporter but I do agree with how this article explains the culture and the article mostly gets it right. I do disagree on the aim on which politicians want to take guns (*pun not intended) for example politicians are focusing on banning semi automatic rifles rather than handguns even though hand guns have less practical use than a rifle, that being a rifle can be used for hunting and home self defense while a hand gun can be used for only self defense (unless you have a good aim and a strong wrist) https://ucr.fbi.gov/crime-in-the-u.s/2014/crime-in-the-u.s.-2014/tables/expanded-homicide-data/expanded_homicide_data_table_8_murder_victims_by_weapon_2010-2014.xls the data provided shows that hand guns are responsible for the vast majority and yet politicians are focused on rifles. In short the gun debate is very complicated and the image of guns is very symbolic of freedom hence why it is very problamatic to simply ban them, but it can regulated nonetheless.
