A team of three U.S. scientists have been awarded the Nobel Prize for their outstanding research on the workings of the 'body clock', and implications on human behavior. They held experiments on the behavior of fruit flies, although their findings can be applied to virtually every animal on Earth. Essentially, the team found a protein named PER, and its oscillation within animals over 24 hours: the production of the protein seems to peak during the night, and slow during the day. Disruptions to the body clock can potentially be devastating to the body.
I found this article ( http://www.bbc.com/news/health-41468229 ) quite interesting, as I had always viewed the 'body clock' as more on par with mysteries than scientific reasoning. One finding that particularly struck me as interesting of the team is that even moderate changes within this body cycle can result in increased chance in metabolic diseases, such as diabetes and certain cancers.
The body is extremely fascinating, and it's really cool that these discoveries are true for almost any animal! Scientists are amazing.
ReplyDeleteIt's very interesting. I hope that more research comes from this.
