Ashton Benn- Puerto Rico Potentially Unsafe Water
Since Hurricane Maria has wiped out the water system in Puerto Rico, people have been forced to resort to unsafe water sources that could potentially harm them. Juan Carlos Oquendo ignores all danger signs surrounding an old water well, and he fills up the jugs he has brought with the supposed tainted water. What many villagers don't understand is that the Dorado Groundwater Contamination Site can cause serious health issues in the long run. The area is polluted with industrial chemicals such as tetrachloroethylene and trichloroethylene. One of the main concerns is the fact that some parts of the site may be safe, but it is unclear on which. Samples have been collected and are being studied as we speak. People have a need for water or they will die, the villagers see the water and don't understand the problem with drinking it. Puerto Rico's Department of Health are so desperate to fix their growing complication, that they have deemed the water safe in hopes that it can cure the deprived surrounding villages. If one well has contamination, then it is certain that it will be spread.
The crisis in Puerto Rico is growing as the government struggles to fix all the dilemmas, and adding unclean water will only create more obstacles in the future. The United States is trying to help by collecting samples and telling the people to not drink the water, but many don't have a choice. Water is such a basic necessity, and its really a testament to how large the problem is that citizens have turned to drinking hazardous water.

Olivia Wall- It is very sad that Puerto Rico has unsafe water, I hope that the government can fix that soon. I am glad that America is trying to help collect samples.
ReplyDeleteI agree with Olivia! I am so happy America is trying to help with this issue. We need each other. It is so sad thinking they don't have safe water to drink.
