Ashton Benn- Egypt Qualifies for first World Cup since 1990

Egypt has not been to the world championships since 1990, this has partly been because of stadium disasters in 2011-12 and 2012-13. Because of the disheartening revolution, the league was cancelled, and all hope seemed lost. But after the electrifying, last sixty seconds, where Mohamed Salah took the penalty goal that lead for a 24 hour party in Cairo, hope was rekindled in the crazed fans. Everyone was in tears as the Pharaohs now had the opportunity to compete in the FIFA world cup. The national team is meeting the Egypt's president, Abdel Fattah el-Sisi to receive 1.5 million Egyptian pounds.

I think that this is an amazing example of team and country bonding together after a tragedy and basking in the light of victory. It shows that in a time of political and economic unrest, Egypt can still celebrate the things that they hold so dear. The rest of the world knows nothing about American football, they instead are engrossed deeply in the soccer phenomenon. The last time an American soccer team had even won their group in the World cup was 2010, before that it was 1930. That's longer than Egypt, but the outlining difference is that many Americans don't follow soccer or even bother to get involved while majority of countries are so invested in their soccer teams, that they pay them millions for winning important matches.

  1. This is so amazing. I cant imagine how accomplished these players and the whole community feels. I agree that this is a good representation of a country bonding together after a tragedy.
