Allison Majors 10/1

A woman from Iowa was arrested for leaving her kids home without any adult supervision while she traveled to Germany. She has two 12 year olds as well as a six and seven year old. The police received a report saying there might be unsupervised kids in her house only one day after she departed. They called her while she was in Germany and she was immediately arrested when she returned home. She was charged with one account of making firearm available to a person under 21 and with four counts of child endangerment. The children are now staying with relatives.
It is terrible that a mother would leave the country without any plans for her young kids at home. None of them are old enough to provide for themselves and they require adult supervision. It makes me wonder if the mother had a bad experience that traumatized her mind and caused her to make this terrible choice. This reminds me of salutary neglect in APUSH where from 1607 to 1763, England didn't really pay much attention to its colonies. The colonists were, in a way, on their own.

  1. This is terrible that the mother was planning on just abandoning her own kids! And I liked your connection to salutary neglect because the mother obviously doesn't take good care of her children.

  2. That's terrible parenting especially the children being under the age of 16. She deserves the punishment received, and I believe should have a background check on previous events.

  3. I wonder what this mother was thinking! I can't imagine being left at home alone while my mom was in Germany, I can see why she was punished the way she was. I liked your connection, because this situation is a good example of a type of salutary neglect.

  4. That is so tragic. Parents need to take responsibility for their children and make sure they are attended to at ALL TIMES! And I don't know how the kids felt being left at home, in my opinion I think they felt alone and scared.

  5. I couldn't imagine being a mother who leaves her young children at home while she is in another state, let alone another country! I wonder what was going through her mind while she was making this decision?
