Da Vinci's New Painting- Ellen Fritz

A painting named Salvator Mundi has been identified as one of Leonardo Da Vinci's paintings and is expected to fetch 100 million dollars at an auction in November of 2017. This painting is one of the few known Da Vinci paintings which is why its expected to sell for so much. Salvator Mundi displays a dark portrait of Christ raising his right hand in the typical Renaissance painting style. Because this kind of painting- Jesus Christ with his right hand raised- was very common at the time, the artwork wasn't identified as one of Da Vinci's until recently. This painting could help illustrate Da Vinci's life more clearly, including his ideas of religion, or lead to more discoveries of his inventions and artwork.
I think it's important to look back at the designs and art of early inventors to figure out how their ideas and sketches evolved to the mechanics we have today. For example, Da Vinci's early plane designs led to further speculation of wether flight was possible or not and without his inventions, the technology we have today may not exist. Reflecting back on historical designs can help simplify modern technology.

  1. As a non-visual artist, this information is very unique to me because it shows a different perspective of someone's art and the importance of it.

  2. As a visual artist, I'm glad my pal Da Vinci is having his work recognized and identified once more. Imagine having your work & their origins be lost to time, causing have future generations have no idea who the heck accomplished that rad piece.

I'm not in visual art, but I find this interesting that there is so much to uncover about art, old and new. I'm curious as to why it took so long to identify.

  4. I feel like you don't have to be a visual artist to appreciate Da Vinci and his work. I think it is amazing that he had a piece of art that remained undiscovered for so long. Now that it has been found, I hope to hear more about the art and its origins related to Da Vinci.
