Maddie gold- Columbus Day may be renamed

Many places celebrate Native Americans on the federal holiday named for Christopher Columbus. Since Columbus Day 2015, about 14 communities have passed measures dedicating the second Monday in October, Indigenous People's Day. The movement is part of broader attempts to clarify the Italian explorer's role in American history and connect indigenous identity to something more than controversies about sports teams and cultural appropriation.

This relates back to the origin of Columbus Day and the true significance of Christopher Columbus's discoveries. Though support isn't universal it promotes awareness of indigenous people.

  2. Christopher Columbus is essentially gratified and celebrated for his role in bring death and destruction that lead to the extinction of many cultures and peoples. In 2016 i find it devastating that people don't actually know how this country started off. Its time for everyone to acknowledge the suffering and destruction that Christopher Columbus and European and Spanish explorers caused and rename this "national holiday"

  3. Im glad that they're trying to teach how Columbus wasnt the hero popular history makes him out to be. I find it interesting that even spain is considering changing their celebration, seeing as they were the country who funded the voyage.
