Liam Taylor - Racists Vandalize Historic Black School With Racist Messages

Summary: The Ashburn Colored school was built in 1892 as a rare opportunity for colored children to recieve an education. Over the recent years, people have been trying to convert the school into a museum. However, just a few days ago, the Ashburn Old School, which is right outside of Washington D.C., was vandalized. Explicit messages were graffitied onto the side of the school. Some of those messages read "white power", as well as loads of other racist and completely inappropriate phrases and drawings. Fortunately, lots of good has come from this incident. The perpetrators were clearly trying to destroy the black community, but the community in Ashburn, Virginia has come together, regardless of race, in order to try and restore the old school, as well as find the people responsible for this crime.

Analysis: This article was written by Max Blau on October 2, 2016, the same day as I'm writing this blog post. I didn't know anything about the Ashburn Colored School before reading this, but after doing some research, the whole incident makes me infuriated. Although, I feel that not only was this article written for the citizens of Ashburn, Virginia, but I'd say it's audience is truly the citizens of the United States of America. Many people may see this as a negative, and how the article was meant to bring attention to the ongoing issues that we've seen everyday about examples of racism in our society. However, I disagree. I think one of the major purposes that this article was written was to show how the community of Ashburn has really come together in this crisis and how kind they've been with each other. I also believe the main idea is that we, as a country, can come together to stop the hate, as long as we stop looking at each other by color, and start looking at each other as human beings.

Synthesis: I can really synthesize this incident to the Articles of Confederation and the Constitution. America was struggling in the time of the Confederation, but the actions taken by them to create a government and write and make all these laws showed their aspect of unity. Similarly, the community in Ashburn was upset and distraught over the whole debacle, but they came together in an effort to fix the school house. Both parties experienced their fair share of tough times, but they both just show that separation is bad, while unity is good. After all, we are the UNITED States of America.

  1. I think it is terrible that someone would do something like this. I always wonder if when people do things like this they really think before they act.

  2. This makes me sick. Every time something like this happens I feel such a huge disappointment, but it comes with a small amount of hope, carried by the strong rebounding communities in times like these. I really hope they can restore the school and the community.
