Summary:
On September 11th an article for NPR discusses the tradition of bullfighting in Spain and how
more and more people are protesting against this cruel inhuman act. This certain topic has been controversial for a very long time and people debate whether or not they should continue with this tradition or should they totally abolish it since its an act of violating animal rights. These protests have been mainly intensified as a result of a viral video that was put out by the animal rights organization Pacma. This video shows a baby bull being killed and tortured as a form of entertainment. This poses the question of whether old traditions like these are meant to be kept and should continue to be done or should they be banned once for all. Many Spaniards have agreed that the killing of a bull durning this event is truly shameful and is shouldn't be apart of their ways of culture anymore since it's the modern century. Traditions like these are in the past and a should definitely stay in the past. But this doesn't keep the fact that it's still happening now, especially illegally. Although the rise of bullfighting protests have increased this tradition isn't likely to go away that easily. As Rodriguez says "Our traditions are linked to our history — to the weather, to the culture, to the people. It's a lot more than hurting animals for the sake of hurting animals. It's rooted — and that's why it's so difficult to get rid of it."
Analysis:
Before I read this article I did have some prior knowledge to Spain's bullfighting traditions and always thought of this act as a gruesome one. As an animal rights activist I feel as you shouldn't get pleasure from killing an animal for the sake of your own entertainment. The Bull has a life too but sadly it doesn't get to make that choice. Although the article gives a great point of why they should keep this tradition alive only for the sake of Spain's history and their way of life in general. Its truthfully not right at all to keep this tradition alive and going on. It should be a thing of the past and not our future. As a society it's crucial that we change and evolve hopefully for the better than for the worse.
Synthesis:
This certain event can be connected to the sport cockfighting which is in fact very awfully similar to bullfighting in many ways. Cockfighting is a sport done all over the World especially in the Latin countries like Mexico. Cockfighting can be defined as a blood sport between two roosters where one of them ultimately dies or gets injured. This is done by attaching metal spurs onto the roosters own natural spur and by doing this allows for the roosters to kill or injure each other. Like bullfighting it's banned in certain areas although it is still illegally done by people n secret. Traditions like these are naturally in fact hard to let go of especially if it has shaped and defined that cultures way of life. But is preserving this tradtion in fact for the greater good or the worst ?
