Madison Harvey: NFL Players Knelt During National Anthem

Summary: A group of Miami Dolphin football players knelt during the national anthem on 9/11. Upset over social injustice and police violence the  players are taking a stand. Fans wrestled with the idea of nationalism, dissent and loyalty. Some fans feel that the players are there to play sports and saying "we don't care about your political views, we want to see you play football" others think the players are standing up for what is right and more young role models should do the same. President Obama appeared in a prerecorded message, saying: “It’s Sunday here in America. That means it’s time for football. But on this day 15 years ago, the world was shaken.”

Analysis: I can understand the players motive and I feel you should stand up for what you believe in, but on a day like 9/11 I don't think it was appropriate timing. 9/11 was a day where thousands of people lost their lives and we should be taking the time to remember them instead of criticizing our country. This issue of police violence has been going on for a while. I don't necessarily aprove or disapprove of what the players are doing to grab peoples attention, but I do agree there is an issue that needs to be solved.  Another similar event in history was when Muhammad Ali refused to join the Army and fight in the Vietnam War because of the social injustice in the United States.

  1. Kiri Luckey: I feel the players should stand up for what they believe in. They can still play ball while fighting/standing up for what they think is right.

  2. The players sat to make a statement on the treatment of black people in America, and they also sat on 9/11 to make that same statement - but to also honor the lives that were loss. 9/11 has been memorialized because of how big of a impact it was when we saw terrorism on our front door but this wasn't the only great show of terrorism - lest we forget the mass killings of black people that happened countless times in our country (ie. the Charleston shooting). I believe the player were sittting to shed a light on those deaths and on a day like 9/11 it is even more important.

  3. I feel as if the players should express their feelings on the injustices that African Americans are facing but also they should handle it in a better manner

  4. I completely see the motives of what they were trying to do with kneeling, but this isn't the first time this has happened. They are kneeling for a cause that needs to be brought to greater attention which is the treatment of black people in America, but they knew what kind of respons they would get which is why I think the timing of this action wasn't right.
