This article was about how 280 Native aAmerican tribes gathered near Cannon Ball, North Dakota protesting an oil pipeline that was being put in. It was said that this could be the largest, most diverse gathering of Native americans since Little Bighorn. The tribes came from all over the world in order to be there. And when the government said they were being held up at at an important river crossing, many worried about how it would effect those who rely on that river. The article also includes sone short interviews with several people who attended.
Before reading this article, I had no prior knowledge of the tribes or even the pipe line. the purpose of the article was probably to inform and maybe even persuade the reader to support the Native Americans. The intended audience was probably the average american or even those in support of the pipeline. The way you hear from individual people makes you feel very sympathetic to the Native Americans. You get to hear how it would personally effect them. This article is important because if the if the pipeline continues through the river it would effect everyone who uses the river. The article also highlights how when specific groups for Native Americans were in trouble, people from all over the world came to support them and help their cause. This event can be related to American history because of the insensitivity to the Native Americans' land and ways of life. Both then and now there were issues with with the government respecting the Native Americans.
This is so important! Many people only acknowledge Native Americans as people of the past, and don't recognize that they are among us today. Such a vast amount of people crying out for what they believe in is important, but with so many different tribes this is exceptional. Protecting the environment is essential, and the protests of these people need to be respected, and listened to.
ReplyDeleteI had no idea something this significant was going on. If that many tribes joined together to protest, the pipeline must really affect their lives. It's nice that so many people came to support the cause.
ReplyDeleteI read somewhere else that the river this pipeline would be interfering with is the main source of water for the nearby Native American Reservation. I think this dismissal of not only the possible impact on the people living nearby, but also the ecosystem as a whole, is a travesty and that it is great so many people are banding together in support.
ReplyDeleteI didn't know how prominent Native American Society was until i read this article. The mistreatment of Natives has always been a problem, for we as a more developed society don't appreciate their customs and traditions therefore making us unappreciative of their culture.
