Kennedy Waterman - High School Football Team Recruits Female Player

In Houston County, Alabama, Ashton White has been recruited as the kicker on the school's football team. The catch: Ashton is a girl. Her sport of choice is soccer, but since the school doesn't have a soccer team, her coach, Josh Cox, asked her to be on the football team. She is the only girl on the team. Not only is she really good, but all of the boys treat her with respect, as well as protect her. Ashton says "They protect me like I'm their little sister."

I think that this piece of news may seem insignificant, but is actually really important. The author is Elyse Wanshel, a female, so that perspective plays into the writing. You can tell that she is supportive of the idea. Before reading this article, I knew that there are a ton of differences in the way society treats men and women. Pay rate, beauty standards, expected behaviors, etc. It's always good news to hear about women, especially young girls, rising above these notions. I think the article was aimed at both men and women in a positive way. It shows that gender norms can be broken, and that people can do what they love no matter what gender they are. The article is significant because breaking these gender norms is truly a modern idea. Our society has come really far in even just the past 50 years. This can be related to the 19th Amendment, which gave women the right to vote. That was a barrier that was broken, just as this is.

  1. This is an amazing event in today's society! It shows that men and women are equally tough, and that women should be given all the same opportunities as men!

  2. This must make her feel so proud. I remember seeing an event similar to this a few years ago. I love that the team will accept her for having an interest in playing on a men's football team!
