Katie Schuldenberg: "Safety of Woman in India is Being Questioned"

Summary: Mahesh Sharma, Indian tourism minister, states while introducing certain tourism tips that wearing skirts while in India risks the safety of woman. Concerning responses immediately followed. Not only did Sharma’s comment question the safety of woman in India, but what is happening to prevent the sexual harassment and abuse from occurring. In the past, India has been known for some rather violent sexual assault cases, along with other crimes that have been difficult to maintain. To make matters worse, Mahesh had a comment last year that sparked the same debate concerning woman going out at night. Even though the minister’s comment may have just been worded incorrectly, the reaction brings even bigger worries to the table. Woman from all over the world speak up on feminist issues seen through these comments and what they prefer to be changed.

Analysis: These comments by Sharma feed to India’s reputation of low protection from crimes due the insufficient number of policemen and security. There is a possibility that this could contribute to less tourism in the future and more criticism on India as a whole. As feminist issues arise, I am understanding new problems that I didn’t even know existed. I am seeing how certain issues can be difficult to solve, such as the dressing in India due to predators. Taking precautions isn’t a bad thing, but when it affects our daily lives, it takes away our rights as woman; it changes the way we live and present ourselves. Some would even go as far as to say that it changes us to become someone that we are not.

Synthesis: The feminist side of this article relates to the issues that the woman in early English settlements had. Seen as only objects, these woman had their voices suppressed by men and their power; never getting the chance to express their opinions and views. The circumstances are similar here, as the voices of these woman are getting suppressed by the lack of government security. The rights of these woman are disappearing as men get away with more and more of these offenses.

  2. This is like a sexist dress code on a national scale!! I don't think that restricting women is the way to keep them safe! It just isn't progressive to think of it that way. It isn't women's fault that they are being attacked, its the fault of the people attacking them. The government in india did recently pass legislation making stalking and voyeurism a crime, among other measures to keep women safe, but it isn't enough, because the new laws aren't being properly enforced.

  3. This is extremely worrying, that instead of men being taught to control themselves, women must change what they wear. We need to change this sexist attitude.
