Kate Kahle: Indian Man Sentenced After Deadly Acid Attack

An Indian Man was sentenced this week after killing a woman with acid when she refused to marry him three years ago. This is the first death sentence given for an acid attack in the country. New laws put in place to curb crimes against women after a fatal gang rape in 2012 were the cause of this punishment. Though it took a year for the perpetrator to be arrested, and 2 more to be sentenced, the family of the victim say they "are happy justice has finally been delivered". Despite these new laws, Indian women say little has changed, and they still feel unsafe.
I think that this is a big step forward for women, especially in India, a place where women are treated more poorly than almost anywhere else in the world. The fact that the government is beginning to value women enough to put laws in place for their protection is something that is really encouraging to me. I think the next step to truly make effective what they are trying to achieve is to work on adamantly enforcing the laws to make women feel safe to walk the streets, say no whenever they want, and do whatever men can do.  I am glad that this first bit of justice has been served, and I hope this campaign will continue.

  1. As a woman myself, I wholeheartedly agree and support every step our world is taking towards women's rights. We have come a long way since then, but there's still work to be done in other places around the world.

  2. Hopefully this sentence isn't just another a sentence and it leads as an example for men everywhere that it is not ok to be cruel to women for no reason

  4. This is a good baby step, but there is a long road ahead for true justice for women.
