Hayley Cagle, Syria Cease-Fire Gets a Fitful Start

Summary: A cease-fire took place Monday night in Syria. Once the violence has reduced to a tolerable amount, US and Russia will begin conducting military cooperation and political negotiations. US officials noted that cease-fire will not fully be reached for some time due to this country's violent last five years. Prior to the start of the cease-fire, Syrian President Bashar al-Assad vowed to withdraw all opposition-controlled territory. Local rebel groups demanded "guarantees" of government implementation before they were on board. US stated that this cease-fire heavily relied on Russia's thoroughness.

Analysis: For the first time in five years, Syria has reached a cease-fire. This is a very delicate matter due to the fact that the state of Syria as a whole is very fragile. American officials were able to reach an agreement with Russia for the safety and prosperity of Syria. If all of this goes according to plan, it will be the first step in the right direction for Syria's future.
