The New York Police Department arrested 32 year old Emirjeta Xhelli on Thursday, September 8th, for attacking two innocent Muslim women and their children. Striking the women on their faces and bodies, Xhelli also attempted to rip the hijab off of both of them. She shouted, "this is the United States of America, you're not supposed to be different from us," and "get the (expletive) out of America (expletive), you don't belong here." Xhelli pushed one of the infants' strollers down to the ground and forcefully shook the other. There were no serious injuries. Xhelli will face trial on Wednesday, and the Council on American Islamic Relations of New York is urging mosques and other Islamic institutions to increase security and stay safe as it is the weekend of 9/11 and many American-Muslims face the risk of being attacked.
The anniversary of 9/11 sparks a lot of tension towards innocent American-Muslims. Many are threatened and a handful are attacked like these women and children. This article demonstrates how ridiculous and ignorant these attacks are, and hopefully raises the awareness that these hate crimes are a common occurrence and need to be stopped. Americans should celebrate diversity and tolerate all religions and customs. This can relate back to colonial America, when the Quakers were attacked and killed for their religious beliefs and traditions.

Lol I just realized we posted the same article.
ReplyDeleteI completely agree. Hate crimes against Muslim Americans drastically increase during this day every year and they are incredibly ignorant.
I'd imagine it's a very scary place being in America with all this hate directed towards your group. Americans need to drop this dumb prejudice, it's quite annoying.
ReplyDeleteIt's horrible that they have to live in fear of us just because we are afraid of them....it's being taken to far now a days.
ReplyDeleteI also agree. I think this was a hateful, prejudiced act against this woman and her children. While we have a right to feel angry and hurt, we shouldn't take it out on an entire race. Everyone is different, because we have the freedom to be. If we didn't, how could we call ourselves the land of the free?
ReplyDeleteThis is beyond disgusting. So many women and children flee their own counties because of terrorism. We as Americans have to remember that terrorist attacks don't just affect us. It's sad that we are fighting each other based on difference in culture or ethnicity, instead of banding together to create peace.
