"Space probe finds lost Philae lander on comet"
Summary: After years of the Philae lander, who's main purpose was to study the surface of comets and search for organic compounds, being incommunicado, it was finally found by a wondering space probe. The lander could not send information back to Earth due to its lack of energy to power its solar panels in the depths of space. When the comet neared Earth a little while ago the Philae managed again to send a few bits of information before returning to its hibernation. Now that the lander's exact location has once again been pinpointed scientists can now use the information it has collected to further their research.
Analysis: If the location of the Philae lander had not been found by this space probe then the three days of information broadcasted to Earth a few months ago would have been useless. Now that the scientists know they can continue to use that data to further their research into whether or not life and organic compounds were brought to Earth by a comet. This could be connected to the discovery of the wreckage of the Titanic in 1985. Not only did this discovery provide more insight into the history of the Titanic and the people that went down with it, it also gave scientists an opportunity to observe the way sea life adapts and develops.
That is so cool that it relates to the Titanic.
ReplyDeleteThat's rather amazing. Scientific discoveries are one of my favourite things, and it's fascinating that many discoveries have been made by accident. This might've been a way by which to intentionally collect information, but to suddenly receive a signal from a lost probe sounds like something taken directly from a Sci-Fi novel.

It's so incredibly how small things like this can relate to something that many people have seen. Who would've thought that something like this would've helped the discovery of many more things .
ReplyDeleteThis is really interesting how the lander was finally able to find a comet to send information. Its so cool how even today scientist are learning more information about space, and how we still have so much to learn about in the future.
