"Plexiglass"- Bethany Wolfe 3rd pd

summary:
15 years ago, Hatnim Lee disobeyed her parents and began photographing customers at the family's liquor store. Her pastime project evolved into a series entitled "Plexiglass" to which she refers the sheet of acrylic separating her from customers. She photographs as many people who allow her from behind the glass and visually expresses the personality of her customers. Through this series, she wanted to shed light on people and conversations we pass up daily.
analysis:
I find this series so interesting as we rarely think about what it's like on "the other side of the glass." I also applaud her use of perspective behind the glass, as some faces blend into refractions of light and others are emphasized. All draw the viewer in through their unique expressions and personalities. Her interest in common people found in a public place reminded me of Jacob Riis, a social realistic photographer in the early 1900's. The title of his book, How the Other Half Lives, is also similar to Lee's motive behind her portraits. Through photography, they both depict the common lives of people we daily disregard and bring eyes to social movements.

  1. I think what she does is great. You can use plexiglass in many ways. She chose a creative way to use it.
