Emily Miller- Snake head found in can of green beans

Troy Walker enjoys cooking for her own grandkids and the church youth group. She was making food for a youth group fundraiser when she found a snake head in a can of Western Family green beans. She thought it was a burnt bean at first, but soon realized it was the head of a garden snake. Troy's first concern was, where is the rest of the snake?

She contacted Western Family, and they immediately had stores take their green bean cans off the shelves. They said that they take foreign objects in food very seriously and will begin researching to make sure that it doesn't happen again.

This event reminds me of Upton Sinclair's "The Jungle" and the effects it had on the food industry. The Meat Inspection Act and the Pure Food and Drug Act were passed because of it. Food has certainly become safer since then, but we still have to be careful. Because somewhere in the country, someone is shoveling a headless snake out of their bowl of green beans.

  1. Nice synthesis! Also this story is very disturbing. The food we eat on a daily basis should not have to scare us. We shouldn't have to starve ourselves because of the possibility of finding something in our food.

  2. We're privileged that this doesn't happen as often as it could and there would be no way you would starve just because of this one incident unless all you ate were Western Family green beans. Although this is a disturbing story, the company seems to be handling it responsibly and from the information given, there's only been one reported case so don't become paranoid over this. Even if this becomes a wide spread problem you can always just stop eating their green beans.

  3. That must be scary to see a snake's head in food that you were planning on eating. Also brings up questions of where your food is coming from.
