On Saturday, a Disney cruise ship stopped on it's way to the Cayman Islands to pick up 12 suspected migrants southeast of Cuba. The 12 migrants were on a "rustic" vessel, which is a dangerous/unseaworthy vessel. They have now been turned over to Grand Cayman authorities and it's still unclear as to if the migrants were headed to the US.
The article states that US officials have noticed an uptick in Cuban migrants attempting to get to the US recently. A reason for this is fear that days are numbered for immigration policies that welcome Cubans into the US now that relations between the two are warming. More than 120 Cuban migrants have landed here since January. A similar event also happened in 2013 when the same Disney cruise picked up 8 migrants that appeared to be stranded. I understand why anyone would want to help someone stranded at sea, however it has to be taken into consideration that these passengers could be dangerous and harmful to those aboard the cruise. Hopefully measures will be taken in the future to ensure the safety of passengers when allowing anyone aboard.

That's interesting, and I think it is kind for Disney to pick up these immigrant if they are doing it to help them.

ReplyDeleteI feel that the cruise does not have the authority to pick up these unknown individuals with so many others on board who did not give consent to this activity. But these people were in the middle of the ocean on terrible floating devices and they might not have been able to last much longer. This issue is so conflicting.
I wonder what they told the passengers on the disney cruise..?
ReplyDeleteI agree with Brenna. How were they even allowed to pick the people up? That is really disturbing.
ReplyDeleteDid the cruise explain to the passengers that they were stopping to pick these marked people, or did everyone on board the ship just have to wait and wonder why the boat was stopping unannounced.
