This week I read an article about bananas and a new study regarding cancer. In the article it states how a team of scientists worked together to build a cancer scanner, and refined it by testing it on bananas. According to their research, the same enzyme present in human skin is also present in the black round spots that form on bananas when they ripen. These spots may provide a faster and easier diagnosis of human skin cancer and boost survival chances! Team leader Hubert Girault also stated "By working with fruit, we were able to develop and test a diagnostic method before trying it on human biopsies". How crazy?!
Analysis- I find this topic to be very interesting!! I think it's so exciting to hear about all the new ways scientists are working to improve the conditions of others! I can relate this article back in US history to when Upton Sinclair's book entitled "The Jungle" caused a new movement towards the improvement of food and led to the Pure Food and Drug Act as well as the Meat Inspection Act. All of the discussion about bananas in the original article really made me think of how important of an influencing factor that food is! It reminded me of that timeframe where people so desperately wanted change in many areas of their lives, including food quality! It just goes to show valuable food can be!
