El Chapo, the world's most wanted and most notorious drug dealer, was arrested yesterday, Sunday the 10th. He was revealed during an interview with actor Sean Penn, and he was later arrested after a shootout with Mexican soldiers. He faces countless drug charges in the US, Mexico, and likely many other countries. Because he was able to escape the last time he was arrested, Mexico is strongly in support of extraditing him to the states.
El Chapo's situation has a lot of strange similarities Al Capone. Both are famous for their distribution of illegal substances, their widely-spread power, and their use of extreme gang violence. Both had a way of gaining public support and fame. Neither was able to be caught in the act. Al Capone was arrested on charges of tax evasion, and Chapo gave himself away during a silly interview. We'll have to see if they have similar endings in prison.

I think that they should lock him up in the US. If they keep him in Mexico, he will most likely escape again.
ReplyDeleteI think that it is disturbing how someone who does so many bad things like El Chapo can become somewhat like a celebrity. It really only encourages other people to follow suit. It needs to become clear that being criminal is not a glamorous career, and that it actually has some serious consequences.
