Why we need a 21st century conservation corps - Erin O'Day

The 21st Century Conservation Service Corps initiative is aimed at providing opportunities to youth, supporting veterans, and preserving nature all at once. Our national and state parks are suffering from a backlog of maintenance that needs to be done, like keeping up with eroding paths, repairing old and crumbling cabins, picnic areas, and cabins, etc. But there are not enough workers or resources to do this. This initiative puts the youth and veterans to work and is a cost-effective way to preserve our environment.

I think this is a wonderful idea, to start up again something like the Civilian Conservation Corps of the 1930s. It gives the people working asense of purpose and valuable experience, and also helps to preserve our national parks, a legacy started back in 1872 when the first National Park, Yellowsotne, was created.

  1. Walking around state parks, I have noticed these buildings, paths, etc. The CCC seemed to have such a positive impact on communities, and thus I completely agree.
