Summary: The Khipu Database Project at Dumbarton Oaks, at Harvard University, began excavating a storehouse in the Incahuasi complex in 2013. The team of archaeologists, discovered at least 29 khipu. This find is monumental because usually khipu were only found in graves. These khipu were used to take stock of agricultural products. Archeologist Alejandro Chu now is studying these newfound khipu, and he thinks that they could be on the verge of understanding more about the specific uses of the khipu and how they work.
Analysis: The Incan Empire was a thriving and prominent civilization existent before the Americas were discovered by the Europeans. Then when Spaniard came and commandeered their land from them, their culture was buried, literally and figuratively. Their complex and intricate way of life was all but lost to the world when the Europeans took over. And yet over time we have found ways to reach into the past to take the remains of their great nation and analyze it, study it.

I still find it very upsetting to read about the negative influences of conquering, typically white countries. Unfortunately, there is no way to change our past, but thankfully some history of a beautifully complex and thriving society have been preserved!
ReplyDeleteI completely agree. It's sort of bittersweet. We conserve our history that happens to be gruesome.
