Jillian Linnear P.8 | Spike Lee, Jada Pinkett Smith to boycott Oscars Ceremony

Today, on Martin Luther King's day, actor Jada Pinkett Smith and director Spike Lee announced that they will not attend the Oscars Ceremony. They admitted that their time of announcement was done intentionally on this day because it confronts one of the most prevalent societal issue that we seem to still be struggling to deal with, furthermore they address the lack of black nominees in categories. They address the problem cordially, and end their message sending their best and love to people involved. We are dealing with prejudice in every shape and form it seems, and it happens almost everyday. The two talk about the relation between the problems Martin Luther King addressed in his speech, 'I Have A Dream' and situations we are facing with today. The similarity is striking and saddening, we have come so far but only seem to be going backwards.

The article was most definitely affected by the day, as it is Martin Luther King's day. This "fueled the fire" as they say because MLK fought for equality for our African American people and as we go, we only seem to be going in a downward spiral.

  1. I agree that equality continues to fall downwards but African Americans cannot play victim anymore. Our community is dying and rotting away kill by kill. The act is well noted but not attending an award show isn't changing the fact that I, as an African American grl, am still afraid to walk along the sidewalk unbothered or threatened. - Cassidy Jones
