Recently, authorities recieved word of an Illinois school district violating anti-discriminatory laws when they didn't allow a transgender student, who identifies as a female and is involved in sports, to use the girls locker room. Requiring the student to use private changing and showering facilities was deemed unfair and in violation of the student's rights. The school was given 30 days to come to a fair decision or face enforcement action.
We have seen descrimination throughout U.S. history, especially among african americans and women, and we continue to see it to this day among people of different races, sexual preferences, and also transgenders. Although I am disappointed by the descrimination placed on the transgender student, I think that it is good that school authorities are taking assertive steps towards trying to stop these sorts of descriminations. Many transgender teens are identifying as their true selves and it is important that they are treated equal to any other student. We live in a nation based on the principles of liberty, freedom, and equality and it needs to be enforced among all people. I think it is important for us to embrace our differences because we are never really going to be identical, and there is no reason to hate or treat people differently just because they aren't the same as us.

Didn't the Supreme Court already judge the LBGT issue. Wouldn't doing what this school dos be unconstitutional. Come on Illionis
ReplyDeleteIt doesn't make sense that this school would not let this girl go into the girl's locker room. I don't think that the school's officials should also be looked at to see if they are trans-phobic, and if this could be classified as a hate crime.

ReplyDeleteIt is horrible to still see discrimination like this. The student should be allowed to identify themselves as male or female. Locker rooms shouldn't be such an issue. It is a place for a quick change into another outfit for athletics. I believe that schools need to realize that they need to let these kids identify themselves how they want otherwise they're just going to keep appearing on the media.
