unhealthy snack commercials leading to snack epidemic: Samantha Arthur 1st period

CNN reports that major food companies have been recently advertising junk food, like candies and chips, to young children and that advertisements for healthier foods haven't been keeping up. Snacks are truly one of the most popular advertising points--40% of all food and beverage commercials are snacks. They're not only advertised on TV, but on most social media platforms and can also be spotted in adds on phone apps. Researchers compared the amount of snack ads younger people were exposed to in 2010 vs. 2014 and if those adds either promoted healthy snacks and unhealthy snacks. The average percentage of snack ad exposure has increased 19%.

Is this a possible snack epidemic? Obesity in America has been a well known concern for a bit now and I think people are taking a stronger approach to it, compared to past years (especially with the Michelle Obama campaign against child obesity). Everything is okay in portion and the problem is that young people are being so exposed to all this junk food in such vast amounts. If they weren't drowning in candy commercials and chip adds, they'd be less likely to want to eat junk all the time--either conscious or unconsciously. But then again, researchers have to think about how the abolishment of some snack food adds would effect the well being of these food companies and their economic stability.

  1. This reminds me of the mass marketing of diamonds. Such amazing marketing of diamonds has led to the ingrained misconception that diamonds are in fact 'super valuable' when in reality they are virtually worthless. Check out this video for proof! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N5kWu1ifBGU
