Courtney Wilson and Taylor Guererro have been dating for 2 years and decided to take a trip to Hawaii. But what was intended to be a short vacation on a relaxing island ended up being a much longer stay in jail. The couple was shopping for food, minding their own business, when they were approached by an off-duty police officer who insisted that they leave because he saw them exchange a simple cheek kiss. Confused, Courtney called the police to verify. The police officer, Bobby Harrison, then tried to physically remove them from the store, pushing Taylor and punching Courtney when she tried to defend Taylor.
As if this event alone isn't bad enough, he then had them arrested for assaulting a police officer. They had to spend all their vacation money getting out of jail and get jobs to pay off the rest of their bail bonds. They were stuck. All because one police officer decided that he knew best for everyone.
The entire story is unbelievable, but what shocks me most is the fact that the person who started the trouble was a police officer. Police should set fair examples whether they are on-duty or not. Brutality is certainly not a fair, not to mention lawful, example! How can we expect our rights to be protected if those who enforce don't cooperate?
It also disgusts me that no one stepped up to defend Courtney and Taylor. It's in the American spirit to rebel against threats to our natural rights! The right to happiness is just as valid as the rest, and we of all people should back up Courtney and Taylor to protect it.
I agree with you, the police are suppose to be public examples for everyone. This is crazy.
ReplyDeleteI completely agree with you. It saddens me to read this. Obviously we've come a long way, but not far enough. Police should never let their personally beliefs influence their jobs, especially when their jobs effect other people's lives.
