While 170 million is a ridicules amount of money, some would look at this as a investment. This piece sold for so much because of its historical significance. Picasso's "les femmes d'alger" is the most a painting has been sold at a auction and it was sold for 179 million last year. There have been some private auctions where people say that pieces have been sold up to 300 million...
This is truly awesome and gives us visual artists to strive to. Maybe in 100 years our pieces will be sold for that much.
