"Museum of Natural History Reveals Design for Expansion" By Lisl Wangermann Period 1

Robin Pogrebin's article "Museum of Natural History Reveals Design for Expansion" was published on November 4th, 2015. The Museum of Natural History in New York is planning on expanding to create room for its ever-increasing collection, a controversial subject due to the fact that expanding means destroying some of Central Park. This issue, however, has been addressed in the recently released plans. To reduce the amount it encroaches into the park, the museum is tearing down some of its existing buildings. And although the plans call for the removal of nine trees, they will be planting seventeen new trees. Additionally, they will be adding seventeen benches. This plan seems like win for both environmentalists and the museum.

This compromise, which is beneficial for both sides, reminds me of other compromises in American History, beginning with the Great Compromise, which created the bicameral legislative branch we have today, and continuing through the Missouri Compromise. I think compromises have played an extremely important role in the success of our nation, and although this event is no "great" compromise, it is good to see that people are still working together and trying to find the best solution, if though it is slightly inconvenient for them.

  2. It is great that the museum will expand and Central Park will not be greatly effected in return. I agree with how you compared this to the Great Compromise except I believe both sides are a lot more at ease with this decision rather than Missouri's.
