Recently the number of cases involving mothers inflicting violence on their young children has spiked. Several women have been charged with the killing of their infants by tossing them out of high story windows. After or during pregnancy it is said that about 20 percent of women will experience some form of depression, mood, or anxiety disorder. Some of these women don't aknowledge that the are sick, but a lot of them choose to keep it to themself. Although mothers who had Medicaid benefits were more likely to report symptoms.
I have also started to noticed more and more stories like this being advertized lately. It's already pressure being a mother but add having multiple young children, or being single, and not having the insurance you need. I can see how stress and worry like that can take a major toll on someone's mental state, and why they would fear having to tell people about being ill. Now the problem is though, getting all of these women to get the health care they need weather they are stubborn or they cannot afford it.

This sounds like it is becoming a serious problem although it is hard to find a solution especially if they don't get the help they obviously need.

ReplyDeleteHaving kids is rough but isn't the whole point is that you love them unconditionally.. ya know without trying to kill them?
ReplyDeleteThis topic is very shocking and extremely sad! I hope that as a nation we can continue to grow stronger in providing mental health care, especially in cases like this where these mothers are really needing the help! -Nicole Chatham 6th period
