Last Sunday, delegates from the Republican Party met to discuss possible reforms to the debate process, wishing from more in-party unity and fairness. But after a petition was drafted, several GOP front runners, like Donald Trump, John Kasich, Carly Fiorina, announced that they would not be signing the letter, saying to stop complaining. A debate's a debate, and it's worked the same way for decades and doesn't need to change. The people who drafted the letter are frustrated, because almost immediately so many people said they weren't going to sign it.
Honestly, this really confused me and I had no idea what was going on. Debate reform seems unnecessary. I mean, like many of the candidates sai, it's worked for a long time now, why would it need to change? But it is interesting to see how the whole culture of politics and debates and what-not is continually shifting. It makes me want to learn more about the political culture at the start of our nation. We are learning in class what the issues they were arguing were, but it would be cool to see what those debates actually looked like.
