Education Reforms in Colorado -Nicole Chatham 6th period

This week I read an article about education reforms in the Jefferson County district in Colorado. With several complaints and even protests regarding curriculum and teacher pay, many parents and educators are now trying to recall three conservative school board members. Soon after the arrival of the board members in 2013, issues rose to the surface of conversation amongst educators. Private meetings by the three members, disrespect to Cindy Stevenson the superintendent of the school district, and a new teacher pay system have all aided in bringing attention toward education reforms and the possible removal of the three elected officials. Along with that, this article also discussed the amount of financial support for the recall supporters and how there are three new candidates running to replace the three board members mentioned. Those in favor of recall are challenged with this situation, however they will also hold an important vote and establish influence on the upcoming decisions to be made.

Analysis- I find this article to be interesting because I think information regarding education is very important especially because it’s so relevant to my life currently.  I think that the issues expressed in this article are not only thought-provoking but also quite political, which appears to shape several actions being made within the school board. I can relate this topic back in US history to the reform movements in the 19th century, and those specifically related to education. As many efforts of improving life and society were being made in the 19th century, so was the desire to improve education. Horace Mann had a very important influence on education by pushing for free public schools and improving teacher training. While both events are different in terms of what people are actually trying to fix, this comparison reveals how education will continue to be of great importance throughout the years, as people are constantly striving for ways to improve it.

  1. I think it is great that they are trying to improve the school environment not only for the students but for the teachers as well. It is important to try and keep all members of the school system happy so that the students can be educated succesfully.
