Donald Trump hosts SNL- Emily Miller

Donald Trump hosted Saturday Night Live last Saturday for the first time since 2004. Naturally, they made ample fun of him by calling him out on his arrogance, tweeting habits, and general immaturity. I thought the episode was hilarious and was surprised how positively Trump reacted to the ridicule. Afterwards, he brushed it off like a light joke as the audience showered him in applause and laughter and he continued to bask in his self-righteous glory. He even attended the afterparty.

But some didn't take it so lightly. Deportracism.com offered anyone in the audience who yelled "Trump is a racist" or "Deport racism" a bounty of $5000. This person turned out to be Seinfeld writer Larry David, who dressed up as Bernie Sanders and jokingly yelled it from the side of the stage. Other Latino groups even protested Trump's appearance outside the NBC headquarters, calling Trump and SNL racist.

I understand that Trump's campaign is seriously offensive to many people, but why interrupt a live national broadcast to say something that the actors are already saying with their parody? The entire purpose of SNL is essentially satirizing modern issues.

I think that this episode of Saturday Night Live, and the show in general, is important to APUSH because it's a modern version of political comics. Political satire has been a persuasive and comical strategy for shining light on important issues all throughout American history, and we still do it today.

  1. I totally agree and am sad to have missed that episode because the actors would have done us all justice in giving Trump a piece of our minds through their comedy.

  2. Trump is a big joke to me, so this is hilarious. It seems his ego was too large for him to really know they were making fun of him, however. - Gunnar Ozuna Period 6

  3. I loved how SNL had Trump host, because it's a way for people to make fun of him but also stay within the lines offense, which was really easy to do. They handled it very well and It was great.

  4. I think that people overreacted to Trump being SNL. It was obviously supposed to be funny. What is not funny, however, is how campaigning in the US now includes TV appearances instead of more discussion about the issues our nation face. This whole controversy is taking away from what really matters.
