SUMMARY:
This article isn't per say a current event, but it definitely deals heavily with our lives today. The article discusses the fact that many Americans are predisposed to be addicts of painkillers because of the normality and domesticity of the painkillers in America. Many Americans after having surgery or an accident are prescribed painkillers afterwards, without knowing it they are allowing themselves to be exposed to something highly addictive. The article is written in the point of view of a past addict who after having lumbar back surgery became addicted to OxyContin and Percocet. He had the two sense to check himself into a rehab center where they helped him heal with limited pain meds and other practices. Some of those being the treatment of the brain specifically, which is much more effective than the mere numbing of those signals (which is what pain killers do).
ANALYSIS:
Personally I had no idea that pain could be treated with just brain therapy and I think that it is a viable option that should be considered against the use of highly addictive opioids. Why wouldn't we consider something that could stop a nationwide epidemic of addiction?

ReplyDeleteAmericans shoukd be aware with what they are taking and if there are other ways of "healthy" healing. -Cassidy Jones
ReplyDeleteThis is very interesting. I see this often with medicine in general. Within the first moments of sickness, people reach for the medicine cabinet when our bodies have ways to deal with illness on their own. Medicine often suppresses the symptoms of an illness, symptoms that may be necessary in getting better- such as increased body temperature to kill off bacteria, for example.
