Hundreds of bodies washed ashore the coast of Libya. All of the bodies were the bodies of migrant hopefuls, trying to cross the Mediterranean. Men, women, and children searching for a new life in Europe, boarded an overcrowded boat, but as a result of the congested atmosphere, the boat could presumably not support the weight, and as a tragic result, several forms were washed ashore. Since the Libyan government is currently in shambles, they are not in a state to help. Many people volunteer to clean and handle the corpses, most volunteers without prior experience, resulting in much emotional scarring. The fact that the brokenness of the government subjects several individuals to this painstaking task is a statement in itself. This situation is almost like a reflection of the British coming to America. Those aboard the Mayflower came in search of a better life as well, so that they could peacefully practice their religion as well as a life free of the strong handed king. The people that set aboard this ship were in search of a life free of a government in shambles as well as safety and security.

Personally, I believe that people in the United States are so grateful, this passage made me realize the importance and the risks people take for a better life.
ReplyDeleteI can't imagine packing up and risking my life to travel to an unknown place like these people. They must have been very brave.
ReplyDeleteI find this really sad to think about because it's hard just to think that these people left a country of turmoil in order find a better life and then ended up back at the same place and their country was too busy to do anything other than pick them up and put them somewhere else. Also their family that they left behind must have been devastated when they found out because they thought that the ones who left were having a better life when it was the opposite.
ReplyDeleteIt is such a tragedy that these people were trying to get away, with the hope of starting a better life, but instead their life journeys ended on that boat ride. I cannot imagine the fear they must have felt when they knew they were not going to make it across the Mediterranean, and they would never know what their lives could have been like once they escaped the disastrous government in Libya. -Claudia Anthony (3rd period)
