The Most Expensive Midterm Elections Ever? - Froy Gutierrez 4th

This year's midterm elections are looking to be the most expensive midterm elections ever, with a  $3.67 billion US dollars to be spent on just this election. Much of the money is referred to as "dark money" made possible to be spent in a 2010  Supreme Court ruling, which allowed corporations to make unrestricted donations to campaigns.

This screams corruption. The most troubling part of it all isn't that there's been such an increase, but that we don't know who is truly behind the spending. For one, Super Pacs can donate large amounts of money to campaigns without affiliating themselves with any particular parties or candidates. Dark money profit groups posing as non profit organizations may also donate money, and their donor lists do not need to be submitted to the Federal Election Commision.

  1. Personally, I believe that political campaigns have become more focused on the marketing and commercial side to it. Because of this, politicians have become too consumed in the finances of their campaigns rather than staying true to how they will benefit our country. (Elizabeth Muscari period6th)
