According to reports, as soon as Nurse Kaci Hickox's 21-day monitoring period ends this week, she and her boyfriend are planning to travel south. Hickox made headlines last month when she defied her Ebola virus quarantine. Her story really began when she returned from Sierra Leone where she had been treating patients. When she arrived in Newark, New Jersey, she had an elevated temperature and was immediately placed in isolation. This upset her and she blasted Gov Christie for his strict policy on Ebola. The state authorities stated that they wanted to make sure that there was no risk of the outbreak reaching Maine. However, the situation became tense when the nurse left her home to go on a bike ride with her boyfriend. Even though Hickox had tested negative for the disease and was no longer showing any symptoms, the authorities still wanted her in seclusion. Eventually, a judge ruled in her favor because health officials didn't prove a need for stricter order. She will no longer be in quarantine starting Monday.

I was aware of the situation regarding Kaci Hickox before I had read the article, however, I wasn't aware of some of the details. I, personally, side with the state authorities on this one. She should've respected their wishes when they put her in quarantine since there was a very likely chance that she had come in contact with the virus while dealing with patients in Sierra Leone. She compromised the health of her fellow citizens in Maine when she decided to step outside her house and take a bike ride, and I feel like there should be consequences because of it.

I do not blame the government for being so strict on the Ebola quarantine rules. This i a very serious epidemic, even though many are making a joke out of it. She should be less selfish and more considerate of other people.
ReplyDeleteI think it was kind of selfish of her to attempt to skip the 21 day quarantine period. Although she wasn't experiencing symptoms of the disease (to my knowledge), safety should be of the utmost priority in this case.
ReplyDeleteI honestly think she was in the wrong for breaking the quarantine period. She really risked those around her and could've started up other infections. A disease like Ebola has to be treated with the utmost care.
ReplyDeleteShe should of stayed for the whole quarantine period. This is dangerous and could spread the disease even though she didn't have any symptoms. Doctors do not give certain times and dosages just so people can go against them.

This is good she is traveling. This is good for the media too. This will let America know that she doesn't have the virus anymore. Quentin Noble 2
ReplyDeleteshe has a right not to be quarentined if she is not ill and it would be wrong for the state to violate her freedom out of fear
