How dangerous is sleep deprivation really? Arlesia McGowan Period 4

If you sleep less than six hours a night, you're likely sleep-deprived, an expert says.

Soooo we are all Spring breakin' it right..okay. Who takes advantage of sleeping this week? I would like to say noone, considering the fact that, well it is Spring break and we can all just wake up at 3 p.m anyways. No biggie. But anyway, I think all of us would know that with out enough sleep, we can't function. The question is, how dangerous is not sleeping? We all have our sleepless nights here and there, but it really gets bad when  you don't sleep at all. Studies show that sleep deprivation affects your reaction time, cognition and emotions (the three most distinct areas of life) and I think we all know that it an be dangerous, especially when your driving. There is no one "ideal" amount of sleep. Some do well on 9 hours where as others will do well with with 7 hours of sleep; who knows; anything less than 6 hours is called sleep deprivation.
This was all a little obvious to me because I am usually a stickler about how much of sleeping time I get at night; junior year is a little pain, so honestly my sleep varies every night, which is something I am truly NOT proud of. One night I will get 7 hours, the next night might be 4 hours and the night after probably 3, who knows, but consistency is a must in my view. Whats yours?

  1. I can definitely attest to this being true. I often can't sleep and the next day I am miserable and have trouble functioning. I have no idea how people manage to only get 3 or 4 hours of sleep a night and sleep manage to stay conscious.

  2. I know that I don't get enough sleep since I go to bed around 12:30 and have to wake up around 6:00 during the week. While I wish I could sleep for 7+ hours on a school night, it's not very realistic considering I have rehearsal and homework almost every night. I hope that soon I can work on getting into a better sleeping pattern.

  3. I agree with these comments completely. I know that I do not get enough sleep ever...with dance rehearsals until late at night and early in the morning, plus the ridiculous amount of homework I have each night, it's practically impossible to get enough hours of sleep. If only we could have more hours in a day!

  4. I wish I could sleep. I only get a decent amount of sleep on the weekends.

  5. We sometimes take for granted the importance of quality sleep. We tend to place getting work done above getting quality sleep. However, getting more sleep will allow people to stay more alert and focused which will, in turn, help people to get their work done more efficiently, which will help them get even more sleep.
