A team of University of South Carolina researchers has made a remarkable discovery: a rare new breed of hammerhead shark it has dubbed the Carolina hammerhead. The shark's outward features are indistinguishable from those of the common scalloped hammerhead. What's new and distinct about the new species is that it has 10 fewer vertebrae than a scalloped hammerhead."South Carolina is a well-known pupping ground for several species of sharks, including the hammerhead," according to the USC release. "The female hammerhead will birth her young at the ocean-side fringes of the estuary; the pups remain there for a year or so, growing, before moving out to the ocean to complete their life cycle."
Mother Nature is extraordinary. earth never seems to end with the surprises. More and more species are being discovered. But a great question is how do they know it's not already found or how do they find these new creatures. Are there any more species to be discovered on Earth, in the Oceans?? I wonder how many more different species there are yet to be discovered here on land or in the sea.
I agree with you. It fascinates me that we continue to find new species in the world. - Emily Gray
ReplyDeleteIt's crazy to think that there are so many different species of animals that we as humans have never discovered. As big as the sea is, I'm sure there are millions of things we have no idea exist! I agree with your question about how we know if something has not already been discovered...it makes you wonder!
ReplyDeleteWow there's so many things on earth that have yet to be discovered. It's so cool that we are still finding new species of animals.
