Leslie Kelly: Boycott threatened after racial profiling claims at Macy's, Barneys

I think someone else recently wrote about how Macy's and Barney's have been accused of racial profiling, and it would seem that this issue is only escalating instead of stopping. Now, people are threatening to boycott these stores during this holiday season, and are being championed by a Reverend Al Sharpton among other New York civil rights activists. Another point of interest--apparently, this is also becoming a big He-Said, She-Said fiasco. The stores are blaming the unnecessary frisks and accusations on the New York Police Department, but the police are claiming that they were only complying with complaints from Macy's and Barney's employees. Either way, I think a boycott is necessary. First of all, the idea of police flat out lying in order to slap the blame onto someone else strikes me as a little strange, especially when (in my opinion) the stores have more to lose here. The fact that people had to go through stuff like this based on their physical appearance is appalling and people have every right to say when they've had enough. Read the article here.

  1. I think it's ridiculous that even in this day and age we are still racial profiling and I'm glad that people are finally taking a stand against it. After segregation in America and a ton of other historical events around the world where people are all treated equally and not based on color of your skin it's sad to see that we still revert to that.

  2. Byron Otis- I agree with you that racial profiling is insane and unnecessary, and the NY police frisks made only to keep numbers up are embarrassing and sad. However, I wish I could understand more what exactly these stores are being accused of. What is the boycott about?

  3. It's about customers being accused of stealing expensive merchandise due to racial profiling. If you're black and bought something expensive-looking, you end up getting detained by police only to finally be told "oh hey sorry our mistake." It's really silly. That's what's led to the boycott.

  4. If this is indeed true, then that's outrageous. Nobody should be discriminated against for their race.
