"Bill On Workplace Bias Appears Set To Clear Senate Hurdle" (Melissa Kurtzman, 5th Period)

Summary: A new bill called the Employment Nondiscrimination Act is set to be open for debate in the Senate this week. This bill adds sexual orientation and gender identity to the federal nondiscrimination law. It gained its 60th supporter this week when Senator Dean Heller, a Republican from Nevada, said he would vote yes; this makes the bill virtually filibuster proof when it comes time to vote. This will be the first time since 1996 that a bill granting legal protection to gays and lesbians will come before the entire Senate. The only problem is that with House of Representatives having a Republican majority, it is unlikely to pass when it reaches there.

Analysis: I think it's great that a bill like this is coming before the Senate for a vote. Since the article states that there is a clear majority of Senators voting yes, I hope that it passes on to the House without too many problems. It's upsetting that people can already predict that the bill won't pass in the House. I wish that Republicans in the House would be more open to issues like this.

  1. I agree with our analysis. I am glad that this bill is being considered to be passed. The government has won a good vote from me!
