What you need to know about synthetic drugs- Alix Kast

Synthetic drugs are manmade and come from chemicals rather than plants. This term refers more to synthetic marijuana and bath salts that are sold as household items, as opposed to methamphetamine, which is also technically a manmade drug. In Colorado, there was a recent outbreak of hospitalizations and even some cases of death that were linked to synthetic drugs. It is very difficult to ban these drugs, as the chemical compounds are changed whenever a law outlaws the use of a particular compound. Little is known about the result of using or overdosing on them, but they are particularly dangerous because of the types of chemicals and combinations used. When different chemicals are added together they can have a completely different effect on the human body and mental/emotional state. The article mentions two starling and dangerous events linked to the use of bath salts- a man used just his teeth to rip up the rear seat of a patrol car, and one woman attempted to behead her elderly mother.

Personally, I can't agree with any form of drug use, so perhaps I am too biased to judge the entire situation. Any drug use has its dangers, and this seems especially true for "synthetic drugs". I had limited prior knowledge of the topic, but I remembered hearing on the news a while back about people who had used bath salts doing some very insane things. The best way to solve this would be to raise awareness about the danger of these products and to attempt to create a law that would make the selling and use of such drugs illegal.

  1. yes, when having a strong bias it can be difficult to analyse articles. However I do see a good point made by the article. When laws are created to prohibit specific drug compounds, those dependent on them will create alternatives that could very well be more detrimental. In reality, others can not stop someone who is dead set in their ways in wanting to do or try something but allow knowledge on repercussions. I do agree raising awareness would be beneficial
