Western (not so) Beauty ideas: Devon Travis

This week i read an article and viewed images of woman from different continents who have changed their personal image to look like the stereotypical "western kind of beautiful". These women have had their skin lightened, eye surgery, breast implants, tummy tucks, and more this idea of caucasian beauty ideal. The surgeries are painful and expensive, but if they can look like a better version of themselves, they'll do it.
This bothers me that American society can effect so many other cultures to change their faces and bodies to look like an "American Ideal"? Most Americans don't look like barbie, but many attempt to. Recent society is so self conscious about their appearance and in fear of not being the prettiest, smartest, -est. In my opinion, plastic surgery usually leads to distortion of a person's face-- and their natural beauty. I know we judge by appearance, but is it that important to go under so a few more people might like that you better? You can't be young forever- don't keep trying forever.

For images of these women who underwent surgery to look more idealistic, click onhttp://cnnphotos.blogs.cnn.com/2013/09/06/love-me-not-the-western-idea-of-beauty/?hpt=hp_c3 !!!

  1. That sounds horrible. What even is the "American Ideal" to people on other continents? Blonde hair and blue eyes? Stick thin? How many of us actually look like that? People from other counties and continents should be proud of the fact that they are different and beautiful in their own ways. Even those of us that do live in the USA need to come to terms with their own beauty and realize that they are beautiful and unique and do not need absurd surgeries to make themselves look like someone they are not.

  2. Wow....people these days. Well I can believe it though unfortunately. What they dont realize is that when those people get older, all the plastic surgery is going to fall right off and they are going to have to get it again. Their skin will sag and everything like that. There is always consequences to actions whether they are good or bad....

  3. Those pictures were awful. It's awful how much our culture emphasizes being ideal and even more awful how other countries believe it too. I didn't realize until now how other countries respond to our 'idealism'.

  4. I totally agree with you. Theres always going to be someone who doesnt like you, or something about you that people wont like, forever.

  5. Although I certainly believe that cosmetic surgery for those who have great disfigurements or have been in accidents can be very rewarding, I tend to agree cosmetic surgery is generally harmful. It is especially disturbing that people are sacrificing there natural beauty just to look more "western". Thanks for your post. I agree.

  6. I never realized how just how much American society has influence over the culture in other parts of the world. It really shows how dependent we have become on acceptance, even if that means risking one's life through surgery. It also shows that we should be more accepting of others, and that our actions do affect and influence the actions of others, whether good or bad.

  7. In today's society, there are so many magazines, television shows, movies, and more that focus on the "ideal" image of men and women. They make it seem so important for people to portray this certain image, which is not fair at all. Everyone is unique in their own way and that shouldn't be judged by anyone.

  8. in this youtube video (nhttp://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iYhCn0jf46U )
is another example about how the women we see as beautiful dont even appear the way the a photographed at all. The reasources we aknowledge as informing can really be detremental and in order to change we must come to agreement to support and encourage one another for improvemnet

  9. It so sad that the focus of today's society is perfection and beauty. There such a big influence of it in our everyday life, like on tv shows, movies, in magazines, or even through our peers. I think the WORLD as a whole should see that its not that important to be skinny or have the perfect tan, there are just bigger problems happening right now.
